Currently, there is a closed recycling loop that permits the reuse of recycling material for food packaging for PET bottles only – but it may not be long before other materials can also be recycled in a closed loop. Excellent progress has also been made in relation to the 100% recyclability of polystyrene. Recycled polystyrene suitable for food use couples all the well-known advantages of polystyrene (in terms of usage, processing, the consumers, and the environment) with the added value of being a completely circular polymer with a favorable ecological footprint. Greiner Packaging’s portfolio of recycling technologies (with mechanical recycling, break-down and depolymerization) makes the material the ideal basis for closed-loop recycling for food-contact applications. In their presentation, Jens and Tobias talk about the first application for food use approval in the EU and about trials by SCS members. They also answer questions from the floor.
